Siena in One Day: How to Plan the Perfect Visit

In this article:

Visiting Siena in one day is an art of subtraction. The city is so rich that the real difficulty is not finding things to do, but deciding what to leave for next time. With an intelligent plan, you can touch the essential highlights and come home with an experience that is deeply satisfying, without the frustration of rushing from place to place.

Siena is just thirty minutes from Poggibonsi, and the ideal is to arrive early in the morning, before the tour groups descend. The medieval city still half-asleep, its red bricks lit by the morning sun, is something magically intimate.

How to organise the day: a timetable

Here is a realistic plan for Siena in one day:

  • 9:00: arrival and Piazza del Campo
  • 10:00: Torre del Mangia (if booked) or Palazzo Pubblico
  • 11:30: Cathedral, Piccolomini Library, Baptistery
  • 13:30: lunch in the centre
  • 15:00: stroll through the contrade alleys
  • 16:30: Basilica of San Domenico
  • 17:30: sunset from the Medici Fortress or Piazza del Campo
  • 19:00: return to the hotel

The key is not to overload the afternoon. Siena requires slowness and listening.

Morning: Piazza del Campo and the Palazzo Pubblico

Arrive at Piazza del Campo when it is still relatively empty. The shell-shaped square, sloping towards its centre, welcomes every morning as if for the first time. Order a cappuccino at one of the bars on the square and sit outside: that view, with the Torre del Mangia rising against a blue sky, is already in itself an immense gift.

The Palazzo Pubblico and its Civic Museum house Ambrogio Lorenzetti's frescoes on the Allegories of Good and Bad Government, 14th-century masterpieces that speak of politics, justice and daily life with extraordinary vividness. Spend at least forty minutes here.

The Cathedral and its hidden treasures

Siena Cathedral deserves at least two hours. Giovanni Pisano's facade, the black-and-white striped interior, the inlaid marble floor with 56 biblical scenes: every centimetre is a work of art.

Don't miss the Piccolomini Library, accessible from the left nave: Pinturicchio's frescoes depicting the life of Pope Pius II are among the most vibrant and narratively rich of the Italian Renaissance. And the Baptistery, below the square, conceals a baptismal font by Jacopo della Quercia that is worth the trip in itself.

With the OPA SI Pass, valid for 3 days, you can access the entire Cathedral complex at an excellent price.

Sienese lunch and an afternoon in the alleys

Lunch in Siena is a ritual. Local traditional dishes include ribollita, pici with wild boar ragu, wild boar sopressata and typical sweets such as ricciarelli and panforte. A meal in a trattoria on Via Banchi di Sotto or near Piazza del Mercato sets you up perfectly for the afternoon.

In the afternoon, get lost among the alleys of the seventeen contrade. Each neighbourhood has its oratory, its fountain, its colours. The Basilica of San Domenico, with the chapel of Saint Catherine of Siena, is a place of intense and collected spirituality. The Medici Fortress, with its gardens and panoramic bastions, is the perfect spot for sunset.

How to Get There from Hotel La Magione

From Hotel La Magione in Poggibonsi, Siena is 30 minutes by car along the SS2. By Tiemme bus it takes about 40 minutes. Parking outside the walls (Stadio, San Francesco, Il Campo) is convenient and well connected to the centre by frequent shuttles. The ideal approach is to walk into the upper city from the car park: that first encounter with the medieval walls is already deeply moving.

Conclusion

Siena in one day is intense, rich and emotional. Never exhaustive: this city reveals itself slowly and demands return visits. But even in a single well-organised day, Siena gives you memories that last a lifetime. Let yourself be wrapped in its amber light, the scent of its alleys, the music of its bells. You will come back.
